It’s an unexpected collaboration, but one to please Omega and Swatch fans, alike. The two Swatch Group brands came together for a very cool take on the Moonwatch and to make this highly sought-after classic accessible to a wider audience. Outer space inspired a new collection of eleven Bioceramic quartz chronographs named after the planets of our Solar System. Bioceramic is unique mix of two-thirds ceramic and one-third material derived from castor oil.
Although colors like pink and pale blue offer strong clues that these are not the standard Speedmaster watches, even hard-core Moonwatch enthusiasts would be hard-pushed to find the difference in the overall look. The key Moonwatch design features are all in the MoonSwatch: the asymmetrical case, the famous tachymeter scale with a dot over ninety and the distinctive Speedmaster subdials.
Each MoonSwatch has its own mission statement, inspirational engravings and joint “OMEGA X SWATCH” logos on the dial and crown. The battery covers feature a depiction of its planet. A touch of astronaut chic is added by the Velcro straps. The debutantes are available in selected Swatch stores from 26th of March and retail for $260.
And in case you were wondering how the launch went: As expected, people stood in line for hours to get one of the watches, and stores did run out of stock quickly. Here’s the situation in Zurich, Switzerland (Bahnhofstrasse and Airport):
Hottest thing since Bennie Babies
There were 50 watches reported available at the Dallas Swatch boutique. 1200 people lined up. 25 of them got 2 watches. the kicker was when one of the lucky ones found a buyer on the spot, for their watch, for $5000 in cash. Insane!
This is a historic moment for all watch enthusiast .
I like much of the Omega line, the coloring here is good, and I like the strap; but those rings around the 6 o’clock sub dial!! It creates a facial expression I don’t care for. A big show stopper for me.
