Chronographs

A chronograph is a device that measures elapsed time, i.e., a stopwatch. It is one of the most popular watch complications, and appears often in sports watches. Chronograph watches that number among the most famous and iconic watches in history include the Rolex Daytona, TAG Heuer Carrera, Omega Speedmaster, and Zenith El Primero, among others.

The word “chronograph” can be used to denote the device itself or a watch that incorporates the device. Most modern chronograph watches are equipped with a center-mounted seconds hand for showing the elapsed seconds and a subdial or subdials to show the elapsed minutes and, on some watches, the elapsed hours. A standard chronograph watch has two pushers on the side of the case. The top one is used to start and stop the chronograph function and the bottom one to return the elapsed seconds, minutes, and, when present, hours hand to zero.

Watch Test: IWC Portuguese Yacht Club

In 1967, IWC launched one of its biggest success stories: a sporty, three-handed automatic watch called the Yacht Club. Though little remembered today, it was IWC’s most popular model of the late 1960s and 1970s. IWC resurrected the Yacht Club in 2010, in a new chronograph version, and incorporated it into its Portuguese collection. WatchTime...

Monochrome Monday: Reviewing The Clerc Hydroscaph

Most watch enthusiasts can identify a dive watch at a glance even if the watch only emerges from under a cuff for a few seconds. The bezel is the typical giveaway, but a watch’s brand may be more readily recognizable: the name, DNA and ubiquitous presence. Monochrome-Watches writes that Swiss brand Clerc differentiates itself by putting a...

Fratello Friday: Our Prediction for a New Omega Speedmaster at Baselworld 2015

I would like to use this week’s Fratello Friday to make an educated guess on a new watch that Omega is likely to present during Baselworld 2015 later this month. Almost every year, Omega introduces a limited or special-edition Omega Speedmaster to commemorate historical achievements by NASA in which a Speedmaster was involved.

Breitling Super Avenger Military Limited Series

Breitling describes its Super Avenger Military Limited Series watch as “a concentrated blend of power, precision, and functionality.” The “power” part undoubtedly refers to the new watch’s case, which is made of steel covered with an ultra-resistant, carbon-based black coating. The “precision” and “functionality” most likely refer to this Super Avenger’s COSC-certified chronometer movement, Caliber...

Fratello Classics: 8 Watches for Friday the 13th

As we all try to survive another Friday the 13th, I thought it would be fun to re-post this “Fratello Friday” article highlighting eight watches that have the number ‘13’ in their reference number. While gold certainly isn’t considered...
